NEA Task 4: Research into an Existing Bauer Film Magazine (Empire)

From my research into an existing Bauer film magazine, like Empire, I have learnt what the magazine has said about itself, what it has said about the readership and target audience and how it can accessed by them.

Empire is a monthly publisher who is seen by readers to be the most influential film magazine towards the audience. They include themselves within print magazine, websites, podcasts and even live events. They have collaborated with some of the biggest film studios and have even produced content that no other brand has produced by including world-class film makers and actors, for example interviewing Tom Cruise and following Quentin Tarantino around set and even using the help of Ryan Reynolds to shoot videos.

When talking about their readership they have said that they target towards people who are passionate about what they publish, people who are in relationships and those who are university educated and who spend most of the time working and are busy. Most of their audience are male and 18-40 year olds who are employed.

Empire is seen as the most passionate and and knowledgeable magazine of all as they are able to get exclusive access to movie sets, for example Captain Marvel and because of this they have been able to feature many well-known people like James Cameron, Olivia Coleman, Simon Pegg etc. Their award winning digital edition has been enhanced by using exclusive digital content and making the pages able to come to life through the help of the design team.

Their podcast have on average around 51,000 weekly downloads. They are in the top 5 on iTunes, as well as featuring news, reviews and including any questions that readers have. They invite guests weekly such as Nicole Kingdman and Chris McQuarrie. They hold some live events throughout the year such for readers and other guests; one of their most memorable events was the 2018 which was bale to get onto the front page news.
